Windows 7 Only needs 96 MB of RAM

by Technology Update on November 23, 2009

One of the most astonishing aspects of Windows 7 is that it may be executed in just 96 MB of RAM, although the general impression is that Windows 7 is a much more agile operating system than Windows Vista. The fact that the Windows 7 only requires 96 MB RAM exceeds all expectations. Several users have installed Windows 7 on outdated PCs and laptops and could use them again.

After the release of Windows 7 RC (Release Candidate) and now RTM (Release to Manufacture), it has emerged a kind of subculture where participants try to install the new operating system in old hardware – hardware that is as outdated as possible. Windows 7 runs much better on older hardware than most versions of Windows – be it Vista or XP.

Although this information was not corroborated by Microsoft, various forums for enthusiasts confirm users running Windows 7 on old laptops with as low specification as 250 MB of RAM and a Pentium III chip. Another users claim to have run Windows 7 on a 10 years old PC with Pentium II and 96 MB of RAM and 4 MB graphics card.

Most users explicitly consider Windows 7 much better than Windows Vista. Obviously, 96 MB of RAM is not the recommended or most common hardware configuration. However, if you have a machine with a 1.4GHz Celeron CPU, 512 MB or RAM, a 60 GB hard drive with 4,200 rpm you probably won’t have any problems running Windows 7 on it.

This new Windows 7 operating system is more stable than older Windows versions and it also performs better than them. Due to its low footprint, he operating system can be loaded in just 1 minute and some seconds. There are not many problems with old drivers either.

To put it in a nutshell, no matter what hardware you are using, the difference between the new Windows 7 and the old Windows Vista is like night and day.
