Various tasks clumped together to make one greater whole

The Apple iPad is really a mini computer and most of the functionalities have been designed with this objective in mind. Portability is just the competitive advantage that adds to its value over the traditional computer. In this the manufacturers of the iPad have bowed down to the pressure from the marketing lobby or the public who always insist on portability. At the same time they do not want to lose some of the advanced futures that they can get from their personal computer. The iPad tries to get around this dilemma by designing a product that is nearly as good as a personal computer but yet is vastly more convenient to carry.

Portability alone cannot support a significant market base for the iPad. There has to be some technical functionality as well to justify the costs and the new innovations. Thus it is no good telling me that my iPad can easily be carried to the office yet when it gets there, I always lose my important business files. The tightrope between functionality and convenience is at the heart of most technological innovations in the modern world.

The things that the iPad does

The processing power of the iPad is fairly respectable considering its size. In the modern world, we the consumers demand that the technology that is marketed to us can work much faster than we can. That is the benefit and advantage of mechanization. If the technology that is being marketed is at the same level as a human being or worse, then there will be no point in wasting money buying it. From a purely administrative point of view, the iPad has to perform much better than the average human worker before it can seriously hope to sustain a big marketing life cycle.

Multi tasking is no longer the stereotypical domain of the ladies. Everyone is now required to multi task and the iPad is no exception. Modern business demands that in order to speed up process, the technology must be able to process different functionalities at the same time. The typical system breakdowns that happen when you try to do this with older systems is largely absent from the iPad. I have to say that the overall task of aggregate functionality could have been improved. In other words I would have liked to see the iPad doing a lot more things than it is capable of doing at the moment. Nevertheless they must be commended for improving the multi tasking capabilities of the technology.

Cosmetically the iPad is pleasing enough. You might think that this is not a serious matter to be putting up for consideration on such an important piece of technology. However I would counter argue that some people will buy technology just on the basis of how it looks. If you look at the case of the pink mobile phone, you will understand the power of cosmetic appearance when it comes to securing customer loyalty.
