There are times when we wonder while creating a word document and want to use some special characters which doesn’t exist as a separate key on our keyboard. Also we see people using these special characters and symbols on some forums and also using it in their profile to make it look more attractive. So how do these people go about doing this?
I am just making this article for windows users so if you are a mac user just excuse me, there is a place in our windows machine where you can look for these special symbols and characters and use them in your documents and profiles.
To access to these special characters in your windows machine just follow this instruction.
1. start —>All programs—>Accessories—>System Tools–>Character Map
Once you enter the character map you will be able to see a window similar to this.
Once you get you character map window then you can select the symbol you want to use from there and once you click on a particular symbol just look at the bottom of the window for the shortcut key for that particular symbol.
So now you have found the keyboard shortcut for that particular symbol so now if you want to use that symbol anywhere, just hold on to your alt key + numbers and voila! you have successfully typed in your special symbol right from your keyboard.
Best way to use these special characters is to memorize the keyboard shortcuts for the symbols you are most likely to use so that you don’t have to look in to the character map each time to type in the symbols you will be needing and that makes the work tedious.
another easy way is if you have access to the internet and you know the name of the symbol then just Google it.
For case study I am going to Google for “pounds symbol” just look at the result Google came up with.

So just copy and paste that symbol but this method cannot be that reliable if you don’t have an internet connection in your computer but works well if you do. But still I recommend using character map as it is very handy if you have a windows machine.
Here is a list of some commonly used symbols and their shortcuts.
